HVAC technician tool list: the tools an apprentice buys, the tools the shop supplies and a truck stock list with quantities (free PDF, Word, Google Docs and Excel)

  • The files are free, with no signup and no email asked; the links below go straight to them.
  • Deepsel is our product. It tracks maintenance agreements, and the truck stock in Appendix A is what an agreement visit draws on, so the last section says how the two connect.
  • Prices are TruTech Tools and SupplyHouse prices read on October 1, 2026, and they change. Who supplies a tool is set by your employer, your union agreement or your school, and state law can override all three.

An HVAC technician tool list is the inventory of hand tools, meters and refrigerant equipment a heating and air conditioning technician uses on service and installation calls, divided between what the technician owns and what the shop provides. This one is a printable checklist in four sections, from the apprentice's first-year hand tools to the recovery machine, with a column on every row for who supplies the tool and a mark on the tools that must be rated for A2L refrigerants (R-454B and R-32). Appendix A is a truck stock list laid out as a count sheet with starting quantities, and Appendix B records the shop-owned tools issued to each technician.

The printable list comes three ways: the PDF, the Word version (.docx), or your own copy in Google Docs, which lets you put your shop's name and tool policy on it (read it first). The PDF is eight pages: the tool list and the shop's tool policy, then the truck stock count and the tool issue record, each starting on its own page. The tool list and the truck stock count are also a spreadsheet that works out the restock order from the count. Make a copy in Google Sheets (one click, and the copy is saved to your Drive) or download the Excel version (.xlsx). You can also look at the sheet first without copying it. Every free sheet in the set is listed on the checklists page.

There is no form and no follow-up email. The HVAC tools lists that rank for these searches leave out what a shop needs to hand a new hire. The PDF on the first page of Google is a 28-page brochure from a fittings seller that counts its own braze-free fittings among the basic technician tools.1 HVAC School's list runs to about 770 rows of brands and links, more than 500 of them to Amazon, and says nothing about who pays.2 Jobber's two-page PDF has no micron gauge, recovery machine or refrigerant scale,3 Parts Town's guide has no vacuum pump,4 and the Scribd lists put the download behind a Scribd trial.5 None of the tool lists says which tools must be rated for A2L refrigerants. On the truck side, Totaline's truck stock PDFs list part numbers with no quantities,6 and the only quantity rule on any truck stock page that ranks is HomyScan's: once you reach for a part more than once or twice in a season, "carry two or three."7

Who buys HVAC technician tools: the technician or the shop?

Union agreements, contractor surveys in the trade press, current job ads and r/HVAC threads most often divide HVAC technician tools by price and use. The technician owns the tools that go in the bag. The shop owns the equipment that stays on the truck and the parts and refrigerant that go into the customer's system. The national service agreement between the United Association and the Mechanical Service Contractors of America states the rule in one paragraph: employees "may be required to furnish their own hand tools," while "welding torches, power tools and instruments for measuring temperatures, pressure, air velocities, voltage and amperages shall not be deemed hand tools and shall be furnished by the Employer."8 In the contractor surveys and job ads the line usually sits lower, and the meter and often the gauges are the technician's.9, 10

ToolUsually supplied byWhere the sources disagree
Hand tools: screwdrivers, nut drivers, pliers, wrenches, snips, tubing cutters, flaring and swaging toolsTechnicianAlmost every source agrees. Northern California's UA refrigeration agreement is the exception: "All tools shall be furnished by the Employer."11 A Pennsylvania apprentice ad offers "All tools provided."12 The UA service agreement and some shops replace hand tools broken on the job.8, 13
Clamp meter or multimeterTechnician, in most non-union shopsJob ads ask for "your own standard hand tools, meters, and gauges."10 The UA service agreement puts measuring instruments on the employer.8
Manifold gauges and hosesEither; the most divided itemOn the technician side, an r/HVAC reply says "Refrigerant gauges is also normal tool you should buy on your own,"14 and a shop owner says his workers supply "more often than not the gauges."15 On the shop side are the UA service agreement, a New Hampshire ad ("we provide specialty tools, meters, gauges, and a service vehicle"),16 and a 2026 r/HVAC comment: "Company paid for new gauges to handle A2L."17
Micron gaugeEitherA Charleston installer ad says: "You must bring your own hand tools, micron gauge, and gauges."18 A Phoenix service ad lists the micron gauge among the tools the employer provides.19
Vacuum pumpShop, in most sourcesA minority of shops make the technician buy it. Samm's in Plano, Texas, told ACHR News in 2020: "The technicians have to provide the vacuum pump, the torch kits, any leak detectors, manometers, and basic hand tools."20
Recovery machine and recovery cylindersShopIt is the most consistently shop-supplied item in every group of sources. A 2026 career guide advises: "If a shop makes you buy your own recovery machine, ask why in the interview."21
Refrigerant scale, electronic leak detectorShop, in most sourcesOne shop owner on HVAC-Talk requires "every technician to have a leak detector and an accurate set of scales for refrigerant drums."22
Combustion analyzer, manometerShop, in most sourcesContractors in the ACHR News surveys supply or lend them;9 Samm's makes technicians buy manometers.20
Torches and brazing outfitEitherThe UA service agreement and the Phoenix ad ("oxy/acetylene torch") put torches on the shop.8, 19 On the technician side, the basic tool list in Rockford's UA Local 23 agreement includes a "Presto lite soldering outfit,"23 and Samm's makes technicians buy torch kits.20
Cordless drill and impact driverTechnician in most non-union shops; shop under union agreementsSMART Local 16's agreement says "Electric, air and/or battery powered tools ... are to be provided by the company."24 A reply on r/HVAC says "Some places will provide the drill, but not all."25
Ladders, nitrogen cylinder and regulator, large power toolsShopThe exceptions draw complaints. One technician on r/HVAC lists among his reasons for leaving a job: "Told me I had to buy my own ladders for my van, and reclaim machine as well as vacuum pump."26
Safety gearShop, by federal ruleOSHA requires the employer to pay for required protective equipment, except non-specialty safety-toe boots and prescription safety glasses the employee may wear off the job, and everyday or weather clothing.27
Truck stock parts, refrigerant, consumablesShopThe same career guide lists "the refrigerant itself, and truck stock like fittings, wire, and contactors" as the shop's.21

Shops that make technicians buy tools often pay part of the cost back, and current ads state the amounts: "$500 Tool allowance annually" at a Georgia contractor,28 "Tool reimbursement of 50% (up to $50/month)" at a New York franchise,29 and a Phoenix shop that buys the hand tools up front and recovers the cost from pay, where "The amount deducted may not exceed $1200 in total."19 Tool accounts in the ACHR News surveys ran to $500, repaid at $30 to $50 a week.9 Rockford's UA Local 23 agreement pays refrigeration technicians who bring the basic tool list "a minimum tool rental of $1.00 per day."23

Wage law limits these arrangements. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, if the employer requires the employee to provide tools of the trade, "there would be a violation of the Act in any workweek when the cost of such tools purchased by the employee cuts into the minimum or overtime wages required to be paid him under the Act."30 The Labor Department applies the same limit to payroll deductions for "tools of the trade."31 California's rule is stricter. Its wage orders say required tools "shall be provided and maintained by the employer, except that an employee whose wages are at least two (2) times the minimum wage" may be required to provide hand tools "customarily required by the trade or craft."32 The same subsection "shall not apply to apprentices regularly indentured under the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards," so the rule does not cover an apprentice in a state-registered program.32 The state minimum is $16.90 an hour in 2026,33 which puts the line at $33.80 before any higher local minimum.

Whichever split a shop uses, the union agreements put it in writing. The UA national agreement requires the employee to give the employer "a detailed and updated personal tool list for purposes of replacement in case of theft or vandalism,"8 and the Southern California service agreement lets the employer require employees "to sign a receipt for all new and serviceable hand tools issued to them."34 The printable covers both. The technician ticks the Have box and writes the brand and serial number on each row, which makes the list the personal tool record, and Appendix B is the receipt for shop-owned tools, with serial numbers. The Supplied by column on each row is the shop's policy, filled in before the list goes to a new hire, and a box underneath records the tool allowance and the broken-tool rule. In California, a deduction for lost or broken equipment is allowed only when the loss "is caused by a dishonest or willful act, or by the gross negligence of the employee."32 The career guide's advice to a new hire is: "If there's a tool allowance, get the amount in writing."21

The HVAC apprentice tool list: a starter tool kit for the first year

We read the published tool lists of 17 HVAC programs at community and technical colleges, all editions from 2023 to 2026, and counted how many include each item.35–51 A school list is what instructors expect a student to own before the lab, which makes it the closest thing the trade has to a standard starter tool kit. One r/HVAC commenter describes his college's list as "made by the instructors and HVAC advisory members who were business owners and UA union leadership."52 The first table lists the hand tools and how many of the 17 lists include each one, with the prices printed on the four lists that give prices: Johnson College, South Central, Fort Hays Tech and Northeast Tech.35, 36, 42, 43

For comparison, on October 1, 2026, TruTech Tools listed a Klein 11-in-1 screwdriver with Schrader bits at $16.98, Klein 9 in lineman's pliers at $35.98 and a Malco refrigeration ratchet wrench at $19.68, and SupplyHouse had a Milwaukee M12 FUEL drill and impact kit at $249.00.53 The spreadsheet gives a budget pick and a premium pick for each row where we found both.

The programs differ on the meter and the first refrigerant tools, mostly on timing.

Programs that stage purchases put the hand tools and the meter first and the refrigerant tools later. Johnson College lists the micron gauge, the R-410A gauges and the flare and swage kit for "Semesters 2, 3 & 4."35 Lewis-Clark puts every gauge in its advanced list.39 Northeast Technical Institute marks the meter "REQUIRED ON 1st DAY of CLASS" and notes that the gauges are "for the refrigeration portion of the program."43 None of the 17 asks for a vacuum pump, recovery machine, refrigerant scale, leak detector or nitrogen regulator. Johnson County Community College gives the reason: the college "will provide access to recovery machines, extra hoses, nitrogen bottles, oxy-act torches, vacuum pumps, carbon monoxide analyzers, socket sets, and consumables used in the lab."47 The programs' own totals run from $449.28 for Northeast Tech's ten items to $2,555 for Penn College's kit, with Western Iowa Tech at $1,100, Johnson College at $1,240 to $2,160 and Bismarck State at $2,000 to $2,750.35, 40, 43, 46, 51

The change to A2L refrigerants is reaching the school lists slowly. Two of the 17 name an A2L gauge: SUNY Canton's spring kit has a "UNIWELD A2LM5EZ A2L 2-V Manifold (R-32/R-454B/R-448A/R410A),"44 and Western Iowa Tech asks for a "Navac R22, R410a, R32, R454b gauge manifold."46 Penn College's kit adds an "A2L Reverse Thread Adapter."51 South Central College moved its students to digital gauges "Because of the changing refrigerants,"36 while Lewis-Clark's 2026 list still asks for "Manifold gauges – R12 and R22."39

Working technicians give new apprentices the same advice about what to buy first. "A new guy is expected to have basic hand tools only," reads one answer to a first-job post on r/HVAC.54 On gauges, a reply with 188 points told a student in his second week: "Wait until you get hired before buying manifold gauges."55 On the meter, the advice is the opposite: "do not go cheap with your meter its very important to trust your meter."52 An apprentice whose employer's list totaled "around $6,210" was told: "Big stuff such as torch, recovery, scales, vacuum pump, leak detector, etc should be bought by the company."56

Outside the schools, the Virginia Blue-Collar Tool Foundation's 2026 checklist for new apprentices adds knee pads and a "Respirator (N95 minimum for attic and crawlspace work)," marks the vacuum pump as "often supplied by employer first year," and puts a starter kit at "$1,400–$2,000 at retail."57 A longer example is one shop's new-hire list posted on HVAC-Talk, which runs to 50 lines with quantities, from three adjustable wrenches to a combustion analyzer. The next reply called it "quite unrealistic to expect of somebody who is maybe fairly new to things, particularly some of the high dollar tools in the list."22

The HVAC service tech tool list: meters and test instruments

A service technician adds the instruments that produce the readings on a call: line temperatures and wet bulb for a charge check, gas pressure and flue gas for a furnace, and microns for an evacuation. These are the tools with the widest price spread, so the table gives a budget model and a premium model for each at TruTech Tools' sale price on October 1, 2026. The list prices the retailer prints beside them are higher.58 The checklists in this set print the readings each instrument is for. The installation checklist has the evacuation and micron gauge targets, the maintenance checklist has the charge and static pressure readings, and the furnace maintenance checklist has the gas pressure and combustion readings. The manometer and the combustion analyzer are also the instruments for the boiler maintenance checklist and for the gas readings on the water heater maintenance checklist.

Of these, the clamp meter is the instrument the technician most often buys (it is on 15 of the 17 school lists), and the combustion analyzer is one that shops usually supply.9 Three of the school lists name capacitance among the meter's functions. Johnson College's specification is "Volts, Ohms, Amps, Temperature and Microfarad."35

Refrigerant tools and the A2L rules for R-454B and R-32

One federal rule decides which refrigerant tool a shop must own. No one may service a system holding R-22, R-410A, R-454B or R-32 "without ... Using recovery and/or recycling equipment that is certified for that type of refrigerant and appliance under § 82.158."59 Machines made or imported since January 1, 2017 are certified to AHRI Standard 740 under Appendix B3 for non-flammable refrigerants or Appendix B4 for flammable ones, which adds the flammable-refrigerant supplement of UL 1963.60 A machine certified only for non-flammable refrigerants therefore does not meet the rule on an R-454B or R-32 system. Before opening a residential or light commercial system holding less than 200 pounds of refrigerant, the technician recovers to 0 inches of mercury and "must verify that the applicable level of evacuation has been reached."61

Two more parts of the same rule apply to the technician. Attaching or detaching hoses and gauges counts as opening the refrigerant circuit, so it takes Type II or Universal certification on residential and light commercial equipment. A registered apprentice is exempt while "closely and continually supervised by a certified technician," for two years from first registering.62 Refrigerant may be sold only to a certified technician or to an employer that shows the wholesaler it employs one. That restriction has covered HFCs since January 1, 2018, and EPA applies it to R-32 and to HFO blends such as R-454B.59, 63 EPA's 608 page, updated September 28, 2026, says the rule that ended leak-repair requirements for HFC equipment did not touch "the sales restriction and technician certification requirement ... and requirement to use certified recovery equipment."64

For R-454B and R-32, the A2L refrigerants EPA has listed for new residential and light commercial air conditioning,65 the industry guidance names the rest of the kit. The AHRI Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force's technician sheet says to evacuate "using an A2L rated vacuum pump," to "Use recovery tools rated for use with A2L refrigerants," to "Recover into DOT approved recovery cylinder," and to "Use nitrogen before and during all brazing."66 JB Industries lists the tools that change: "The four main required tools are manifolds/gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery units, and leak detectors," and "tools that don't touch the refrigerant circuit can usually be used for both A1 and A2L systems."67 ACHR News names the same four.68 Shops will carry both sets for years, because R-410A equipment built before January 1, 2025 may still be installed, and EPA's May 2026 rule confirms that "a homeowner can choose to replace their failed condensing unit rather than purchase a whole new system."69 The PT chart for R-410A, R-32 and R-454B is on the HVAC cheat sheet.

Two points are disputed. On spark-proof tools, EPA's listing of R-454B and R-32 says, in a notes column that EPA calls non-binding, that "Technicians should only use spark-proof tools when working on air conditioning equipment with flammable refrigerants."65 The AHRI task force says "Spark-proof tools are not required because the minimum ignition energy (MIE) for A2L refrigerants is considerably higher than the energy of a static spark."74 On the left-hand thread, AHRI's guideline uses "shall," an Arkema article on ACCA's blog calls it "an AHRI guideline, not legally required, but widely adopted,"75 and JB Industries describes it as "part of the new regulatory requirements."67 Totaline's truck stock lists and Penn College's student kit both include the adapter.

A further rule takes effect on January 1, 2028. From that date, a used disposable cylinder has to go for heel removal, or a certified technician can evacuate the heel "to a vacuum of 15 in-Hg prior to discarding the cylinder" and sign a statement saying so.76 A shop that empties its own disposable cylinders will then need the recovery machine and a gauge for the job.

The HVAC truck stock list, with quantities

None of the truck stock lists that rank for this search says how many of each part to carry. Totaline's lists are part numbers,6 Johnstone's truck stock page is a set of categories,77 and ServiceTitan's article recommends minimum and maximum stock levels without giving any.78 The quantities in Appendix A come from technicians who posted what they carry, and the table below quotes each one. For contactors, where the reports run from three to ten, the sheet starts at three. The fire extinguisher is the exception: its quantity comes from the R-454B installation manual quoted above. Where no source gives a number, the row is left blank for the shop to fill, and the sheet prints HomyScan's rule for those rows: a part you reach for more than once or twice in a season goes on the truck, and you carry two or three of it.7 Truck stock is the standing inventory on the van. The parts for one installation job are a separate takeoff, and the HVAC material list template is the sheet for that.

The top of the list holds the parts that fail most and cost least. An online parts retailer's count of 45,247 orders from January 2025 to June 2026 puts run capacitors at 31 percent of cooling-season orders at an average of $19, contactors at 18 percent and $32, and condenser fan motors at 14 percent and $127. In the heating season, flame sensors are 24 percent of orders at $18 and hot surface igniters are 19 percent at $29. The retailer notes that its ranking reflects "replacement demand, which correlates with but does not directly measure failure rates."79

Transformers, relays, pressure switches, limits, filter driers, thermostats, condensate pumps, filters, coil cleanerNamed on most distributor listsNo number given in the sources, except one HVAC-Talk technician's "5 different tstats"86

The sources split on three things. On inducer motors, TXVs and large control boards, HomyScan says they "vary too much by model, so order them against the unit's model and serial number,"7 while Johnstone's truck stock categories include draft inducer motors77 and one HVAC-Talk technician says of TXVs, "I always get two when I need one."86 On capacitors, some technicians carry every common size and others a universal capacitor "for the odd balls."94 On standing-pilot parts, one technician given his shop's gas valve stock to sort found "about 20 thermocouples and 10+ standing pilot gas valves" on a truck, against "about 4 in the last 3 years" installed.89 The shop's own call history settles all three.

Restocking turns the count into an order. Distributors that run truck restocking for contractors describe it as "100 percent replacement of truck inventory daily usage" or as a weekly inventory with replenishment orders.95 An HVAC-Talk technician goes to the shop on Friday to "restock what I used,"82 and ServiceTitan suggests weekly or biweekly updates and "A full monthly audit."78 The spreadsheet's restock column follows the definition of a minimum in Aptora's paid truck stock list: "The minimum number of this item that should be in stock at the beginning of each day."96 The user counts what is on the van, and the sheet works out the difference to order. A 2025 ACCA session put the cost of each parts run at roughly an hour of billable time, and at five runs a month that is "nearly $22,000 on the table annually per truck."97

The cylinders on the truck fall under the Department of Transportation's materials-of-trade exception, which lets a business carry hazardous materials in direct support of its work without shipping papers or placards.98 The limits are a cylinder gross weight "not over 100 kg (220 pounds)" and "the aggregate gross weight of all materials of trade on a motor vehicle may not exceed 200 kg (440 pounds)."99 R-410A and nitrogen are Division 2.2 gases; R-32 and R-454B are Division 2.1 flammable gases, like acetylene and propane.98, 100 For a Division 2.1 cylinder the pressure relief device "must be in communication with the vapor space,"101 so in practice the cylinder rides upright. Arkema writes that "all cylinders must be transported upright since the pressure relief valve is located at the top,"102 and an r/HVAC reply with 42 points adds: "The irony is most service vans have them in horizontal racks."103

The truck stock is what a maintenance agreement visit runs on

A maintenance agreement visit draws on the truck stock. The technician arrives with the filter in the customer's size and the coil cleaner, and replaces the weak capacitor or pitted contactor the inspection finds. Those two parts account for nearly half of cooling-season part orders in the retailer data above. A shop that knows which agreement visits fall next week knows which filters to load. For that reason the filter change log and the equipment list in the material list workbook record filter sizes. The visit itself follows the maintenance checklist or the tune-up checklist in this set, and both use the instruments in the service tech table.

The office's part is the schedule. The free maintenance agreement tracking spreadsheet has one row per agreement, with the equipment covered, the visits owed and delivered, and the renewal date, and how to track HVAC maintenance agreements explains each column. The preventive maintenance schedule template lays the visits out by month. The contract is the HVAC maintenance agreement template.

Deepsel, which is our product, does this job for a shop whose spreadsheet no longer keeps up. It keeps the ledger of visits owed versus delivered per system, schedules and invoices the visits on the plan's cadence, sends the booking requests the plan promises and logs them, and warns you before a paid visit expires unbooked. It works beside Jobber or Housecall Pro and does not replace them. It is built for the membership-style plans a residential service shop sells.

Frequently asked questions

What tools does a first-year HVAC apprentice need?

A first-year apprentice needs hand tools and a clamp meter. Across 17 current HVAC school tool lists, screwdrivers are on all 17 (usually a multi-bit plus a thermostat screwdriver), a wire stripper and crimper are on 16, and a tape measure, adjustable wrenches, tongue-and-groove pliers and safety glasses are on 15 each. A tool bag, nut drivers, lineman's, needle-nose and diagonal pliers and a hex key set come next. A clamp meter that reads microfarads and temperature is on 15. Manifold gauges and a refrigeration service wrench are on 16, but several programs schedule the gauges for the second term or the refrigeration course. None of the 17 asks students to buy a vacuum pump, recovery machine, refrigerant scale, leak detector or nitrogen regulator. Working technicians tell new hires to buy hand tools first and the rest as the work calls for it.

What tools does an HVAC service technician need?

A service technician carries the apprentice's hand tools plus the test instruments that produce the readings on a call: a clamp meter, a non-contact voltage tester, pipe clamp thermometers, a psychrometer, a manometer, a combustion analyzer, a micron gauge and a manifold with hoses for the refrigerants in use. Refrigerant work adds a vacuum pump, a recovery machine and recovery cylinders, a refrigerant scale, an electronic leak detector, a nitrogen regulator and a torch. In most of the sources the technician owns the hand tools and usually the meter, the shop supplies the vacuum pump, recovery machine, scale and leak detector, and gauges and torches go either way.

Do HVAC companies provide tools, or does the technician buy them?

In most shops both do, and the split follows price. Across union agreements, contractor surveys, current job ads and r/HVAC threads, the technician owns the hand tools and usually the meter, and the shop owns the vacuum pump, recovery machine and cylinders, nitrogen setup, ladders, large power tools, refrigerant and truck stock. Gauges are the most divided item. The UA's national service agreement puts measuring instruments, torches and power tools on the employer. Federal wage law says the cost of tools an employer requires cannot cut into minimum wage or overtime pay in any workweek, and California requires the employer to provide tools unless the employee earns at least twice the state minimum wage, which is $16.90 an hour in 2026. That California rule does not apply to apprentices registered with the state Division of Apprenticeship Standards.

What tools do you need for A2L refrigerants like R-454B and R-32?

Four tools change: the manifold gauges, the vacuum pump, the recovery machine and the leak detector. The recovery machine has a federal rule behind it, since EPA requires recovery equipment certified for the refrigerant, and machines for flammable refrigerants are certified under Appendix B4, which adds the flammable-refrigerant supplement of UL 1963. AHRI's technician sheet asks for an A2L-rated vacuum pump and a DOT-approved recovery cylinder. A2L recovery cylinders have left-hand valve threads and a red band, so the hoses need a left-hand adapter. An R-454B installation manual also asks for gauges rated to 800 psi, hoses with a 4,000 psi burst rating, a leak detector that is not an ignition source, and a dry powder or CO2 extinguisher at the charging area. Hand tools, meters and temperature clamps carry over.

What should be on an HVAC truck stock list, and how many of each?

An HVAC truck stock list should hold the parts that fail most and cost least: run and dual capacitors, contactors, fuses, universal condenser fan and blower motors, hot surface igniters, flame sensors, universal gas valves, pressure switches, transformers and relays, filter driers, plus refrigerant, nitrogen, recovery cylinders, filters and coil cleaner. None of the truck stock lists that rank for this search gives a quantity. Technicians who post their stock report two of each common capacitor size and four of the most-used duals, three to ten of each contactor, three of each fuse size, two universal condenser fan motors and two blower motors, two igniters, five flame sensors, two single-stage gas valves and one two-stage, two nitrogen bottles and two recovery cylinders. Restock what was used daily or weekly and count the whole van monthly.

How much does an HVAC starter tool kit cost?

School programs put a student kit between $449 and $2,555: $449.28 for Northeast Technical Institute's ten items, $450 to $750 for Johnson County Community College's required tools, about $1,000 at Moore Norman, $1,100 at Western Iowa Tech, $1,240 to $2,160 at Johnson College, $2,000 to $2,750 at Bismarck State, about $2,500 at SUNY Delhi and $2,555 for Penn College's kit. The shop-owned equipment costs more per item: on October 1, 2026, TruTech Tools listed A2L vacuum pumps from $426.23 to $825.35, recovery machines from $699.99 to $1,174.70, scales from $228.77 to $392.70 and A2L leak detectors from $374.85 to $1,199.99.

Can an apprentice connect gauges without EPA 608 certification?

Yes, but only under supervision. EPA counts attaching or detaching hoses and gauges as opening the refrigerant circuit, which on residential and light commercial systems takes Type II or Universal certification. A registered apprentice is exempt while closely and continually supervised by a certified technician, for up to two years from first registering. Buying refrigerant, including R-410A, R-454B and R-32, also takes certification, or an employer who shows the wholesaler it employs a certified technician. Section 608 credentials do not expire.
