Workiz vs Housecall Pro (2026): prices, contracts, phones, and what neither does about maintenance agreements
- Deepsel is our product. It appears in one labeled section near the end and is not the answer to the Workiz-vs-Housecall-Pro question.
- Every price was checked against the vendor's own pricing page on September 7, 2026. Workiz publishes none, so its figures are its last published rates (archived pages, dated) or owner reports, each labeled.
- Every claim about what breaks links to the thread, review or help article it came from.
Housecall Pro publishes its prices ($59, $149 and $299 a month on annual billing), sells month to month and gives you 14 days free. Workiz publishes nothing, signs every customer to an annual contract and gives you 7 days. Workiz wins on phones and call tracking. Housecall Pro wins on price transparency, QuickBooks at the low end and its Android app. Both gate service plans to their top tier.
These two get compared because they sit in the same slot: the platform a shop picks when ServiceTitan is too much money. Housecall Pro started in 2013 and says it serves over 45,000 businesses and 200,000-plus pros.15, 9 Workiz started in 2015 as Send a Job, built by locksmiths in San Diego, and now claims 120,000-plus pros in the US and Canada.7 That origin still shows: Workiz grew up in trades where the phone ringing is the business, so calls are built into the product, while Housecall Pro starts at a $59 one-user plan and makes its money on the tier ladder. An HVAC owner who'd used both put it in one line in January 2023: "Workiz and house call pro are functionally identical but Workiz has worse billing options."20 The feature lists have drifted since, and that sentence is still most of the answer.

Is Workiz cheaper than Housecall Pro?
No, at any size the published numbers cover. Housecall Pro's entry point is $59 a month for one user. Workiz's entry tier today is Standard, last published at $229 a month on annual billing for up to five users; the cheaper Kickstart and free Lite tiers were gone by June 2026.2 At five users, Housecall Pro Essentials is $149 against Workiz Standard at $229-270. The gap only closes if the Workiz quote comes in under the old list price, and nobody has published one that did.
Here's the worked version for a 3-truck HVAC shop: an owner, two techs and one office user, about $15,000 a month collected by card. Four users fit inside both platforms' five-seat plans.
| Line item | Workiz Standard (estimate) | Housecall Pro Essentials | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription, annual billing | $229-275 | $149 | Workiz: last published rate, May 2025.2 HCP: pricing page, September 7, 20269 |
| Phone system | ~$100 | $65 if you add Voice | Workiz figure is reviewer-reported;28 HCP Voice VoIP plus tracking package, help center10 |
| Extra users | $0 | $0 | User six costs $55-65 on Workiz, $100 on HCP Essentials |
| Card processing on $15,000 | Not published; get it on the quote | ~$389 at the 2.59% floor | Keyed-in and emailed-invoice payments run above the floor on any processor |
| Software plus phone, per month | ~$329-375 | $149 ($214 with Voice) | About $3,950-4,500 a year against $1,788 ($2,568 with Voice) |
Processing will be the biggest line on both bills, and Workiz won't tell you its rate until the demo. Two owner data points to calibrate the estimate: an HVAC shop on r/ProHVACR in June 2024 was paying "5 logins maybe 1500 a quarter," or about $500 a month;22 a Housecall Pro user in the same 2023 thread as the "functionally identical" quote was at "180 a month I think all in."20 The full line items, including the fees each vendor documents but doesn't advertise, are on the Workiz pricing breakdown and the Housecall Pro pricing breakdown.
The contract is the real difference
Workiz's Billing FAQ: "All Workiz plans are purchased on annual contracts, but payments may be made monthly or annually."3 Housecall Pro's pricing page says it "does not require long-term contracts."9 That one line decides how much a wrong choice costs you.
The Workiz complaints cluster around it. An owner who'd recommended Workiz for years asked in September 2024 to drop from 10 seats to 5, was charged for 10 "for the next two months," then charged "$800 AGAIN for 10 accounts."21 The FAQ backs the vendor: added seats "remain at that level through the end of your contract, even if users are later removed."3 An August 2026 Trustpilot review describes a contract at "$45 per user, with a minimum of five users" that "automatically renews for another full year."19 And an electrician who left in February 2026 quoted the downgrade call: "Unfortunately you would have to sign the contract before we end this call or you will lose access."21
Housecall Pro's version of the problem is smaller but real. There's no term, so the exposure is one billing period, and its refund rule is 24 hours after a renewal charge.19 A contractor in January 2026: "I canceled the same day I was charged, but support took three days to respond. When they finally did, they said I missed their 24-hour window and kept the money."24 Cancel in writing before the date, keep the email.
Phones and call tracking: where Workiz earns its price
Workiz's phone system is the reason to pay more. Calls ring inside the CRM, every call attaches to the client record, call flows route after-hours and overflow, and ad tracking tells you which campaign the call came from.1 Workiz's own comparison page leans on it: "Embedded phone and AI Insights" against Housecall Pro's "Phone, but no insights."8 A dispatcher at an 8-tech HVAC and appliance shop that left ServiceTitan over "$300+ per tech" landed here: "Right now we're on Workiz. It's been working fine for us, way simpler and fits better with our setup."20
Housecall Pro's answer is the Voice add-on, and it's cheaper than people assume: call tracking only from $45 a month, VoIP with tracking from $65, up to 30 tracking numbers, recordings kept six months.10 It's a bolt-on rather than the core of the product, and one HVAC shop reported it "was also incompatible with our phone system."23 (Both vendors sell AI answering on top: Workiz Genius Answering at a reviewer-reported $200 a month, Housecall Pro's CSR AI at no public price.)28, 9
One warning before you port your business line into Workiz. A January 2026 Trustpilot reviewer spent "over three months" trying to port four numbers out and was "never given a clear timeline,"19 and the Billing FAQ says numbers left on a cancelled account keep billing until removed.3 Get the port-out procedure in writing on day one.
Where each one hides features on the tier ladder
Both companies gate, but they gate different things, and the pattern matters more than any single feature.
Workiz puts QuickBooks, online booking, the client portal and recurring jobs on every plan, including Standard.1 (Those recurring jobs are real, assignable visits with no price or renewal behind them, and the frequency locks once you save the series; the Workiz recurring jobs setup has the rules.) Then it stacks the operations features on Ultimate: GPS tracking, checklists, equipment tracking, inventory, custom documents, the open API, Zapier and service plans.1 A pressure-washing owner comparing platforms in May 2025 called Workiz "useless under the ultimate tier" for exactly that list.21
Housecall Pro holds QuickBooks Online sync back from Basic, then gives Essentials most of what Workiz reserves for Ultimate: GPS tracking, checklist automations, flat-rate pricing, photo reports, commissions.9 Its Max gate is narrower: Recurring Service Plans, the open API and Zapier, route optimization, the proposal tool, a dedicated onboarding specialist.9 So a 3-truck shop that wants GPS and checklists gets them at $149 on Housecall Pro and at an Ultimate quote on Workiz. A solo operator who wants QuickBooks gets it on Workiz Standard, or on Housecall Pro only from $149, and still pays less on Housecall Pro.
The mobile apps
On iOS they tie at 4.6 stars, though Housecall Pro's rating rests on 29,514 reviews and Workiz's on 2,146.16 On Android they don't tie: Housecall Pro is at 4.5 from 6,718 ratings, Workiz at 2.8 from 425.16 A locksmith in April 2026: "We're currently using them only for job dispatching and I hate workiz... Plus it has frequent glitches and crashes."25 Housecall Pro's app draws complaints about speed instead ("undercooked, slow, and with minimal offline support," from an electrical contractor who left in 2025).24 Trial both on the phones your crew actually owns.
What owners say about Workiz vs Housecall Pro
A note on sourcing first. Two Reddit accounts posted near-identical "I switched to Workiz for its ease of use and client communication tools" comments across seven trade and business subreddits between May and October 2025.27 I left all of those out. A commenter in the r/smallbusiness Housecall-Pro-vs-Workiz thread saw the problem coming in 2022: "Seems all we can find is paid advertisement online."21 What's below is dated, linked and, as far as I can tell, real.
- HVAC, used both, January 2023: "Workiz and house call pro are functionally identical but Workiz has worse billing options."20
- HVAC on Workiz, third summer, June 2024: "5 logins maybe 1500 a quarter. Lots and lots of features that keep growing."22
- Dispatcher, 8-tech HVAC and appliance shop, June 2025: Workiz is "way simpler and fits better with our setup" than ServiceTitan.20
- HVAC, November 2025: "We use Workiz. Found it more user friendly than Housecall."23 In the same thread, the top-voted answer was three words: "House call pro has been good to us."23
- HVAC on Housecall Pro, June 2024: "Housecall pro is much more polish and user friendly. Lacks customizing where is needed."22
- Former Housecall Pro employee, June 2025: "Think of it as Walmart of CRMs. It does a whole bunch of shit but none of it is particularly good or nice. Benefits are it's probably the cheapest in the space for what you get."26
- Electrical contractor who left Housecall Pro, August 2025: "the entry-level plan is nearly $200/mo... and they charge even more for some features like their 'pipeline' thing which feels nickel-and-dimey."24
- Five-year Housecall Pro customer, August 2026: HCP Assist "told a customer calling from a Google LSA lead that my business was closed, even though my hours were set to 24/7"; a large payment "got hit with an $800 processing fee."19
Read across them and the shape is consistent. Workiz users like the depth and the phones and resent the contract. Housecall Pro users like the price and the polish and resent the add-ons and the support queue. Trustpilot, where unhappy customers go, scores Workiz 1.7 and Housecall Pro 2.5.19 Neither is a compliment.
Which should a 1-4 truck HVAC shop choose?
- Solo, or two trucks with no office? Housecall Pro. Basic is $59 for one user and Essentials $149 for five, month to month, 14 days to try it. Workiz charges a five-user price on a twelve-month term, and a solo plumber pricing it in September 2025 found "even workiz seems pretty pricey for their base plan."29
- Inbound calls are the business (locksmith, garage door, appliance, junk, emergency HVAC)? Workiz, with the phone plan, if you can live with the annual contract. If you can't, Housecall Pro Essentials plus Voice at $65 is $214 a month with no term.
- Need GPS, checklists and photo reports at 3-4 trucks? Housecall Pro Essentials has them at $149. On Workiz they're Ultimate features with no public price.
- 5-8 techs with a dispatcher, inventory and more than one location? This is who Workiz Pro and Ultimate are built for, and the owners at that size are the ones who sound happy. Price Housecall Pro Max ($299, 8 users, published) beside the Workiz quote.
- Selling maintenance agreements? Don't pick on this. Neither wins. Read the next section, then choose on dispatch, phones and price.
The rest of the field, from ServiceTitan to Jobber, is compared on the same terms in the maintenance agreement software roundup, and the other big small-shop pair is Jobber vs Housecall Pro for maintenance plans.
Either way: what neither does about maintenance agreements
Both platforms sell a plan module, and both charge the top tier for it. Workiz Service Plans need Ultimate.1 The module bills the card, applies the member discount and then, in Workiz's words, drops each visit on the schedule as a placeholder: "You will not be able to make changes or assign techs to these visits until after you convert them into jobs." The default automation reminds the member 14 days out so that, in the help center's words, "your client knows to contact you to book a specific time and day."4 The booking comes back to your office, one call per member per season.
Housecall Pro's Recurring Service Plans need Max at $299.9 Its help center calls the visits dashboard "your reminder to schedule actual appointment times," says the billing frequency "cannot be changed" once a plan is active and that the card "cannot be removed,"13 and a shop on r/HouseCallPro in February 2026 found that completed plan visits invoice at $0.00 with no link to the plan payment.14 Neither module counts visits owed against visits delivered per member, and neither warns you before a paid visit expires. That's the spreadsheet you end up keeping beside a $299 plan, or an Ultimate quote. The click-by-click detail is in Workiz service plans, explained and Housecall Pro service plans, explained.
This is the part I have a product in, so weigh it accordingly. Deepsel is an agreement ledger that runs beside the FSM you keep. It holds each agreement's plan, tier, covered equipment, card on file and visits owed vs delivered per unit. It charges renewals on the card with retries and flags the ones that fail, emails every member who's due a booking reminder each spring and fall (texts on Pro), and warns you before a paid visit expires. Starter is $79 a month, Pro $159 (coming soon), unlimited users. With Housecall Pro, the reminders carry HCP's own booking link, which works from the $59 Basic plan, so you keep Essentials instead of buying Max; native sync is planned. With Workiz there's no integration today: you import a Workiz export, the reminder carries your Workiz booking link or office number, and your office keys booked visits into Workiz as normal jobs. Stack cost: Housecall Pro Essentials $149 plus Deepsel $79 is $228 a month against Max at $299. On Workiz, add $79 to your Standard quote and put it next to the Ultimate quote.
14-day free trial. No credit card required. Still deciding? The free agreement-tracking spreadsheet works beside either one.Frequently asked questions
Is Workiz or Housecall Pro better for HVAC?
Housecall Pro for most 1-4 truck HVAC shops, because it publishes its prices, sells month to month, includes QuickBooks sync from $149 and has the better Android app. Workiz pulls ahead when inbound calls are the business: its phone system, call flows and ad tracking sit inside the CRM, and shops with 5-8 techs and a dispatcher describe it as simpler than ServiceTitan. Neither runs a maintenance-agreement program well without office work.
Is Workiz cheaper than Housecall Pro?
No, at small sizes. Workiz stopped publishing prices in 2026; the last listed rates were $229-270 a month on annual billing for up to five users, and Ultimate has been quote-only since 2025. Housecall Pro is $59 for one user, $149 for five and $299 for eight on annual billing. A four-user shop pays $149 on Housecall Pro against a Workiz quote that historically started around $229, before phone and AI add-ons on either side.
Does Workiz have a contract? Does Housecall Pro?
Workiz does: every plan is an annual contract, paid monthly or up front, and its Billing FAQ says added seats bill through the end of the term even if you remove the user. Housecall Pro says it does not require long-term contracts, and you can pay month to month at $79, $189 or $329. Housecall Pro's catch is the refund window: cancel within 24 hours of a renewal charge or you keep paying for that period.
Which has better service plans, Workiz or Housecall Pro?
Neither is good enough to run a plan book on its own, and both charge the top tier for the try. Workiz Service Plans need Ultimate; the module bills the card but drops visits on the calendar as uneditable placeholders and reminds the member to call you. Housecall Pro's Recurring Service Plans need Max at $299; completed plan visits invoice at $0.00, and the billing frequency and card lock once a plan is active. Both leave visits owed vs delivered to a spreadsheet.
Which is better for a one-man shop, Workiz or Housecall Pro?
Housecall Pro. Its Basic plan is $59 a month on annual billing for one user, with online booking, quotes, invoicing and payments, and there is no contract. Workiz has no solo tier now that its free Lite and 1-3 user Kickstart plans are gone (both missing from the pricing page by June 2026), so a one-truck operator pays a five-user price on a twelve-month commitment. A solo plumber on Reddit in September 2025 said it plainly: even the Workiz base plan seemed pretty pricey.
Can I switch from Workiz to Housecall Pro, or the other way?
Yes, and both vendors will import your customer list. Two things to settle first. On Workiz, check your contract end date and the auto-renewal clause, because owners on Trustpilot and Reddit describe being held to a renewed term. If you use Workiz's phone system, get the port-out process for your numbers in writing before you give notice. On Housecall Pro, cancel in writing before the next billing date and keep the confirmation; a Reddit post from January 2026 describes a missed 24-hour window costing a month.
Which has the better phone system?
Workiz, if you want one platform for calls and jobs. Its phone product is native, with call flows, ad-source tracking, two-way texting and an AI answering option, all sold separately. Housecall Pro's Voice add-on starts at $45 a month for call tracking and $65 for VoIP plus tracking, with up to 30 tracking numbers and six months of call recordings. Workiz's usage billing (per minute, per text segment) is the line to read on the quote.
